Victims of Sex Abuse Within France’s Catholic Church Say Report Is a ‘Turning Point’

An independent commission published a report on Tuesday that documented the sexual abuse within the French Catholic church and urged officials to take action, the Associated Press reported.

According to the report, an estimated 33,000 children were victims of sexual abuse in the past 70 years by 3,000 priests and other people involved in the church. The president of the commission that issued the report, Jean-Marc Sauvé, said the church has a debt to the victims.

The independent commission requested that the church not to respond to the claims with silence as there is a history of Catholic authorities permitting cover-ups. The commission called on the Church to even compensate the victims, notably in cases that are too old to prosecute via the courts.
